Visualiser features and what they mean to you

This article seeks to answer the question “What should I be looking for when buying new visualisers?”  I have broken the answer down into the following headings…

Functionality

Camera

The camera should be high resolution SXGA or higher with high optical zoom. Typical values of optical zoom range from 5.8 – 16 x magnification. Optical zoom avoids any digital noise that digital zoom can often give. Frame rate is also important. The higher the better and typically 30 frames / second is ideal to avoid blurring of image whilst viewed object is in motion.

Outputs

As a minimum, your visualiser should have RGB (HDD15p) output for direct connection to a projector or alternative display. Better models feature DVI outputs which maintain a digital signal giving a better quality image at the display.

Vitally important is for your visualiser to feature USB 2.0 output which allows you to view your visualiser image through your own PC. This will allow interactive software to incorporate the visualiser image to allow annotation.

Light

Very few applications require base lighting, typically you would only require this when viewing X rays or perhaps analogue film strips. However, look for models that feature base lighting as an optional add on.

Upper lighting is more frequently required to view documents and objects

Software

Everything you do with the visualiser can be enhanced dramatically if you have good software included.  Look out for these features included:

-          Time lapse photography

-          Ability to record your annotations in movie form

-          Screen capture

-          Basic annotation features

Usability / Fitness for purpose

Stability

You will want to be able to safely balance stuff on the visualiser without it falling over/spilling etc.

Reliability / warranty

How reliable are units

Reliability is essential in today’s busy learning environments. Look for models that feature 5 yr warranty.
